During the year of the Tri-centenary of the congregation, the provinces in India were looking out for mission area to cater to the less privileged and marginalized. The then Provincial Superior of Eastern Province, Rev. Sr. Renee D’Souza contacted Fr. Tony Kolb, the Provincial of Pallotine fathers, enquiring the possibilities of working among the tribals of Jharkhand as they were already working in Jharkhand in the Archdiocese of Ranchi.
Fr. Tony Kolb contacted Fr. George Augustine, a Pallotine priest at Khalari parish in Ranchi diocese and entrusted the responsibility of finding a suitable place for us to render our service in Ranchi diocese. Kuru block is situated in the East region of Lohardaga district, Jharkhand State. 14 gram panchayats covered by 65 villages .A place in Kuru block, Lohardaga Dist. was chosen.
St. Charles convent was opened in Nov. 1983. The Pioneers were Srs. Josita Manavalan, Stanislaus and Clotilda D’Souza. It is our own mission. The purpose of the establishment is to impart Christian education to the less fortunate and marginalized children of the locality, specially the tribal children by starting a Hindi Medium School- To work for the empowerment of people especially women through health education and social awareness programme- To care for the sick and suffering – physical, psychological, spiritual and moral- to help the tribal girls to get better education through boarding school.
This is the only convent / mission school in Kuru block and Parish. Due to the dedicated service of the sisters from the beginning, there is rush for admission in our school. The teaching sisters visit the families of students with teachers to assess the family situation and are familiar with the guardians of the students. Sisters in socio – pastoral activities often visit the villages and their visit is appreciated very much by the people. For all the medical needs people still flock to our health centre even though the Government has banned all health centres. The Health centre functions as First – aid centre and still caters to the needs of the people.
A state board English Medium school was started in the year 2008 because of the request of the people, the first batch of students have appeared for class ten board exam in 2020. 10 houses were built for the needy people with the help of agencies and our contribution. Financial help is availed to deserving students for professional courses.
With the help from four sponsorship programme and with the fees collected from English M. School we are able to manage the financial needs of the community and the institutions. We cater to all the people around Kuru block without any distinction. All the same our priority is for the less privileged, marginalized and tribal people. The students of this school have become successful and are doing well in society. The school has also provided vocations to continue our mission among the poor. There is a lot of hope in the field of education, social and pastoral activities. After 36 years of our service here there are very many people who are very much in need of our service. The need of the time is authentic and enthusiastic sisters for outreach programme.
