Babina is a cantonment town in Jhansi district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is said that Babina is an acronym for British Army Base in North Asia. The Full form of Babina is British Army Base in Northern Asia. The British base near Jhansi was created during the British Raj and passed to the Dominion of India on partition in 1947.
Late Bishop Fredrick D’Souza- Bishop of Jhansi had extended the first invitation to begin a new community in Babina, to Sr. Saroj- Provincial of Eastern Province and then to Sr. Christine Vas- first Provincial Superior of the Northern Province. It remained a dream since the province was new and the shortage of Sisters. When Rev. Bishop Peter Parapullil became the Bishop, he invited us again to Jhansi. Rev. Sr. Sebasti the then Provincial responded to this invitation. Thus Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo reached Babina. On the 27th Aug. 2016 our Convent in Babina was blessed by Rev. Peter Parapulli – Bishop of Jhansi. The convent was built by the diocese and completely furnished by the diocese before the sisters could reside in it.
We are collaborating with the Diocese of Jhansi. The Purpose of this establishment is to take part in the Teaching Apostolate of the school, to do house visiting and carry on social works and be the witnesses of Jesus Christ. We are collaborating actively in teaching Apostolate of St.Xavier’s Senior Sec. School affiliated to CBSE having 700 students. All the three sisters are teaching in the school. Pioneers of this Mission are Srs. Usha Rani Minj, Urmila Baxla, and Poonam Kerketta. We are getting reasonable salary which is enough for us to meet our day to day expenditure, for major requirement we depend on the Provincialate. We are also involved in the parish activities. We shall soon venture into the social work. We cater to the local village children who are not very well financially and also we reach out to a few army children. There is hope for the future depending on the army children.
