THE HUMBLE BEGNINING OF ST.CHARLES CONVENT , BHADRAVATHI

The day was29th june 1942, when Mother john bosco, Mother Teresita and Mother Antonia arrived from Mary Immaculate Convent, Shimoga, at the request of the authorities of M.I.S.L. Bhadravathi to take charge of the Welfare Girl’s Middle School. They took up M.I.S.L. quarters.
The Sisters had to face all sorts of difficulties from the MISL workers, Management and lay reaching staff, In December 1957 with approval of Superior General Sisters resigned and joint to Community at Nirmala Hospital
MISC authorities had not given up the sisters even though they had resigned from welfare school. In September 1959 they requested the sisters to open a English medium school . For this purpose they leased out 15 acres of land for 99 years. Mother Virginie accepted the offer , on condition that she also permitted to open a kannada medium school for the poor specially catholic population. On 21st May 1973 sisters found a separate community with Mother Theresita as superior.
The tiny seed of love sown in the soil at New Town, Bhadravathi is flowering and bloosoming in to a fully gown tree bearing fruit for the Master Jesus. Today Sr.Rita and 15 sisters of the community are fully dedicated in their services to Educational, Social and Pastoral activities of the place, the Parish and Diocese.
ST.CHARLES KANNADA MEDIUM SCHOOL

ST.CHARLES KANNADA MEDIUM SCHOOL
It was opened on June 1st 1960 with sr.Louisa Rasquinha as first headmistress with strength of 75 students and got recognition in December 1961. In October 1971 students occupied the new building. Till then classes were conducted in the church hall and MISL works the trainee quarters. At present there are 500 students are studying in our school, 10 dedicated Government aided teachers are teaching under the direction of Sr.Elizabeth Fernandes as Headmistress.
St.Charles English School
As per the term of the lease deed an English school started on June 15th 1960. Sr.Philomena Saldanha was the first headmistress. Sisters were residing at Nirmala hospital, Old town.
In June 1965 the English school building officially opened and it was blessed by Bishop Alphonsus, Bishop of Chikmagalur.

According to the request of the parents ICSE syllabus was started during year 2017-18 from Std I – IV.

During the year 2018 – 19 a new extension to the school building was constructed which has been effectively added to this institution. Today as many developments have taken place and strength of Students – 1502 , Staff – 64 and Principal Sr.Lucy Pais .
Kinder Garten School
On 20th November 1977 the new K.G and nursery building construction was started and inaugurated in 1979. In 1984 the K.G students were shifted to community building basement and same building was used for newly started Kannada high school.June 3rd 2002 the Play home was opened by Sr. Camila, then superior to reach out to the working parents and give employment to the women.At present we have 445 students and 20 staff on the role under guidance of Sr. Icy Sylvia saldanha.
Kannada High School
St.Charles kannada high school was started on 16th July 1983 with aim of providing secondary education to the young girls specially to our kannada primary girls. Since there wasn’t building, the classes were conducted in Kannada primary and later shifted to K.G building. June 2007 boys also were admitted to the school. At present we have 190 Students, 10 Government aidedstaff and Headmistress Sr.Lucy Mascarenhas.
P.U AND DEGREE COLLEGE
June 29th 2006 the new building was ready and the P.U College was started with Sr. Philo Jacob manager, Sr.Carmine D’costa, the pioneer principal, 21 students for science and 6 for commerce.
In 2009 with the demand for higher studies by parents & students began the St.Charles Degree College.At present we have 23 staff both for P.U and Degree, and 211 students in P.U and 173 students in degree college.
ST.CHARLES SPECIAL SCHOOL
Sr.Icy Sylvia, Special educator and Social center co-coordinator Sr.Juliet, made a good study by visiting the special children in our neighborhood, and realized the need for special school. St.Charles special school was inaugurated on 21th November 2015, under guidance of Sr.Lizzy, Manager with a view of providing service to the differently abled children, who are neglected in the society because of their disability.
The Aim of our school is to cater to the all round development of the children with intellectual challenges. Since there was no rooms the classes were held in two class rooms of kannada primary school for 8 differently talented children. The special school works in co-ordination with the social work centre. At present Sr.Prabha is the director and 2 more staff helps 16 children in whole round development.
Social Work Center

The mission of social work centre began in the year 2001 at New town, Bhadravathi by Sr.Sylvia Das along with 5 staff namely Mrs. Mary, Gracy das,Asha,Padma and shalome. The manager of St.Charles was Sr.Camila.The activities of the centre carried on by Srs.Adline,Juliet and Elize Lurdh. With the Direction of Sr.Elize Lurdh present the social work centre has the following activities.

  • Monthly meeting self –help group , Prison ministry
  • Micro financing for farming, agriculture purpose and education of children.
  • Medical example/ free health checkups, counseling, reaching out to the home bounds and needy.
  • Quarterly federation Meeting along with awareness programme such as environment issues, Swatch Bharat Abhiyan, planting the saplings at Government schools and villages etc .Celebrating women’s day , Mother’s day ,Independence day and national environment day.
