Foundation

The first house of sisters of St.Charles Borromeo in Andhra was started in the year 1967. This stands as the effect of the zealous response made by the then Provincial our late Mother Christine to extend the missionary service to all parts of India. Her enthusiasm lit up by the call made by the Guntur bishop Rt. Rev. Ignatius Mummadi, she set out to the new region with her two sisters Paula and Assuntha who placed their feet in Chilakaluripet town of Guntur District on 28th June 1967. They were welcomed by Rev.Fr.Inniah,the then parish priest

Aim And Initial Services Rendered

The Convent had a very humble start with the two Sisters, Paula and Assuntha, who boarding in a rented house in the month of August of the same year started a nursery for children and a dispensary. These were the then felt needs of the locality, as Chilakaluripet was a developing town with both capitalists and working class as its inhabitants. That explains that there were the children of the rich who needed school for their education and the extremely poor people whose needs were immense. In order to establish an effective missionary centre, the sisters planned to have an English Medium School which would fulfill one of the needs of the local people. This could also be a financial source to the other projects such as beginning a Telugu Medium School, establishing a dispensary, an orphanage, tailoring school, Crèche etc. to express the Charism of our founder and express our concern for the poor by teaching, caring for the sick, relieving all kinds of moral and physical misery and thus make known the love of God our Father to all.

Aim And Initial Services Rendered

The realization of the plans started with building a dispensary in the site donated by bishop Mummadi.  This served as a residence as well as dispensary from the year 1968 to 1973.   The gradual increase in the strength of the school brought in a dire need for a school building which was raised in the year 1976. More pupils came in from the surrounding villages which made it necessary to have a boarding house that was put up in the year 1978. A Creche had also been started which functioned for some years and then was closed down.  The functioning of all these projects needed more hands that were promptly supplied by the congregation and so the community of sisters gradually enlarged from 2 to 6.  A private chapel and house for the sisters were also completed in the year 1973.

Apostolic Works Which The Sisters Were Engaged With

  • An English Medium High School, a boarding house for 100 children, a tailoring School to increase the number of professional young women, a dispensary where free Health Service was rendered, a free boarding home for girls etc., were the activities through which the Sisters endeavored to reach out to all.
  • Though pastoral such as assisting the minister of the Parish in the maintenance of the church and religious services, catechetical service to children, etc. which were co-ordinated by the sisters both in the Parish and in its sub-stations, have also been included to extend their compassionate service for the marginalized.
  • 1982 : Sisters started an orphanage for 25 Catholic children of the locality who were studying in the RCM School in the town. In 1989 the orphanage was shifted to Kanaparru since the RCM Telugu medium school was in in the Church campus closer to the Sisters’ residence.
  • From 2006 to date 15 old people, neglected by their sons and daughters, are taken care of. On 8th of every month we give them the ration and other toiletries for one month. Once a month it is a get-together for all of them to have some time of prayer, tea and chat.

DISPENSARY : In 1968 the dispensary was constructed with the financial help rendered by Rev.Fr.Deliege which served for some years as the residence for Sisters cum Dispensary. Medical service of the Sisters became irrelevant with so many hospitals around and currently the building is used as canteen.

SCHOOL : In 1969 a shed was built to run the school, first year there were14 children in the nursery. The following year classes were conducted in the Auditorium of the Ladies Club. In 1970 land was given by the bishop, on the Pedanandipadu Road. School building was started in 1972 and it was completed in 1976. Sr.Asuntha was the first Headmistress and instrumental in building up the school into what it is today. Sr.Paula was the first correspondent and she also rendered her services in the dispensary.

HOSTEL : More pupils came in from the surrounding villages, that made it necessary to have a full fledged boarding house. Foundation for the hostel building was laid on 01.10.1977 and it was completed in the year 1978 by Sr.Imelda.

AUDITORIUM: In 1989 the Auditorium was constructed. This is the first and best Auditorium in Chilakaluripet. Every visitor who came in to the campus in those days admired this structure constructed with all the facilities for a mega gathering in Chilakaluripet.

JUNIOR COLLEGE: As the parents requested the management to start a junior college, In 1995 foundation for the Junior College was laid and it was completed in 1996. Hostel facilities were provided for the college students. The junior college was initially only for girls but later became a co- educational institution. In the year 2017 junior college was closed for want of strength and lack of finance.

THE NEW PRIMARY BLOCK: In 2011 a new primary block was constructed adjacent to the auditorium to accommodate the outgrowing number of students in all the classes.

2013 THE CLASSROOMS WERE FACILITATED WITH SMART BOARD, and the students now enjoy the benefits of visual learning that enables them to understand the concepts better. In 2019 we introduced ICSE board in our school. We are giving awareness to the parents about the ICSE BOARD.

Difficulties it faced : A killer cyclone hit Andhra on Nov 19th ,1977 . This was a terrible and tragic experience for the people; many lost their dear ones, their homes and their cattle. It took long time to restore the state to normal. Yet a second cyclone devastated the state with all its fury on May 11, 1979. The people were given shelter in our school. They were provided medical and moral support. On October 2014 a terrible flood played havoc and many people lost their livelihood.

Celebrations : Chilakaluripet, the first community in Andhra has had a few occasions when the Jubilee Bells chimed to call on people to rejoice and render thanks to God for His faithful care of this mission.
