History Of The Community – Tirupattur

St.Charles Convent, is the ‘GUILD OF SOCIAL SERVICE CENTRE”. When we speak of Tirupattur, ‘fellowship’and ‘friendship’distinguish it as its special role.

In 1967 on 21st March Fr.Ardusso SDB an Italian Missionary, founded the Guild of Social Service at Tirupattur, Noth Arcot District, Tamil Nadu, solely for the development of the poor and backward classes of the locality. The Provincial Superior, Mother Christiane and Mother Rene accepted the invitation of Fr.Ardusso to take up the projects of the Guild of Social service. Provincial (Mother Christiane) arrived at Jolarpet on March 20, 1973 to open the new project of Tirupattur. At that time, the communities of Jolarpet, Tirupattur and Yelagiri were administered by one Superior, Sr.Francisca. The first three pioneers of Tirupattur were Sr.Carola, Sr.Mathew (Mary Thomas) and Sr.Vincent.

Fr. Ardusso had built a Dispensary and the sisters from Jolarpet attended to the patients once or twice a week. He also built a workshop for spinning; a tailoring section was under construction on a five acres piece of land given to the convent.

Fr.Amala Dass the parish priest cut the ribbon and declared the spinning Centre open on October 2, on Gandhi Jayanthi Day and it was inaugurated by the President of Sarvodaya Sangh. Many poor girls of the area received training and were given employment.

On November 10, 1974, the Bishop of Vellore blessed and laid the foundation stone for the convent. On June 1, 1976 Mother Benedicta Lobo, new Provincial Superior and her Councilors made the community of Tirupattur a separate canonical community and Sr.Paula was the superior of the new community. In June 1976, Fr.Ardusso left for Italy, prior to his departure the authorities of both the congregations settled all the matters pertaining to Tirupattur. The needle work section was opened and blessed by Rev.Fr.Stephen Bernard SDB, Rector of Don Bosco Tirupatur on June 1, 1977. The sisters engaged in outreach programme, rendered medical aid, created opportunities for the education and counseling of the children and provided jobs to the young.

Responding to the signs of the times and true to the nature of ‘fellowship and friendship’ of the community, the great visionary Rev. Fr.Francis Guezou SDB inspired to extend the horizon by opening St.Charles Matriculation school in 1988. A boarding house for boys was inaugurated, but closed later on. Gradually spinning, dispensary and tailoring classes had to be discontinued as trained personnel to manage these sections were not available. In the school, the increase in strength of the students necessitated the extension of the school building. The school was upgraded to Std.X. January 25, 2003 Mother Benedicta, the Superior General, inaugurated the new building. As the number of students increased, there was a need to update the school with laboratories, library, etc. In January 27, 2007 this new building was inaugurated by the Provincial Superior Sr.Jaya. Today the school is upgraded to Higher Secondary.

‘Arpana’ building was blessed by Rev.Fr.Francis Guezou SDB and inaugurated by Mr. Leo Duhayon on February 28, 1985. Later on it was made use for the Formation house. The sisters’ quarters was extended at the back and was blessed on March 24, 2008. Foundation stone was laid for the Auditorium on May 24, 2013 and blessed on 1st November 2014. The classrooms were extended on the top of the Auditorium, blessed by Parish priest Fr.David Job SDB of Tirupattur parish and Sr.Amali Anbarasi , Provincial Superior of Eastern Province cut the ribbon and unveiled the plaque.

The sisters carry on the good work according to the signs of the times. They are engaged in the school teaching, taking care of the evening tuition classes, providing food for them after the class, counseling the students and families, visiting the sick, giving communion to the disabled. The community initiated to form the SCB Associates in the year 2006. Today we have 20 of them helping us in our mission of compassion.

Recounting the steady progress of the missions at Tirupattur is a great joy. “Ever onward we progress towards the Promised Land”… is exemplified by this community. St.Charles Social Service Centre is always an “Inn” where one can enter any time and feel at home.
